Senegal’s Ambitious Railway Revival to Spur Economic Growth

Senegal is on the cusp of major economic transformation in 2024, with expectations of a remarkable 10.6% boost in GDP. At the heart of this economic resurgence lies the country’s commitment to modernising its infrastructure in preparation for its burgeoning oil and gas industry, encapsulated in the national master plan, Plan Sénégal Émergent.

A cornerstone of this vision is the ambitious railway development spearheaded by Grands Trains du Sénégal (GTS), a public enterprise dedicated to revitalising railway passenger and freight transportation. Since 2020, GTS has been diligently working on restoring and modernising Senegal’s railway network, with the aim of enhancing regional connectivity, easing road traffic, and catalysing economic growth.

Significant milestones have already been achieved, including the renovation of the Saint-Louis Airport in 2023 and the recent inauguration of the Bus Rapid Transit System. However, the centrepiece of Senegal’s railway revival is the ongoing restoration of the entire railway network by GTS, which includes the construction of new stations, the upgrading of rolling stock, and the implementation of modern amenities such as Wi-Fi and air conditioning.

Key achievements include the launch of construction for the Thiès train station and successful trial runs connecting Thiès to Touba. GTS President Malick Ndioye has assured that passenger transport will resume in the first quarter of 2024, marking a significant milestone in Senegal’s railway revitalisation efforts.

The revamped railway network is poised to bring about numerous economic and social benefits, including job creation, improved accessibility to remote areas, and enhanced trade routes. Senegal’s strategic location, coupled with its expanding deep-sea ports, positions it as a vital gateway to Europe for landlocked nations like Mali and Burkina Faso, offering opportunities for trade expansion and economic integration.

Furthermore, the railway network is expected to play a pivotal role in the mining and energy sectors, facilitating the transportation of critical minerals and transition minerals such as bauxite and refined petroleum products. This not only benefits Senegal’s economy but also eases the logistical burden on neighbouring countries like Guinea-Conakry.

In essence, Senegal’s ambitious railway revival initiative not only enhances domestic connectivity but also unlocks new economic opportunities, positioning the country as a regional hub for trade and commerce in West Africa. As Senegal continues to progress on its development trajectory, its revamped railway network serves as a testament to its commitment to sustainable growth and economic prosperity.
