AWS Announces Plans for New Infrastructure Region in Mexico

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has revealed its ambitious strategy to launch a new AWS infrastructure region in Mexico by early 2025, significantly expanding its footprint in Latin America and underscoring its commitment to empowering digital transformation across the region.

The forthcoming AWS Mexico (central) region will offer customers a diverse range of options for hosting their applications and serving end-users from data centres located within Mexico. This initiative aims to cater to the growing demand for localised content storage and ensure that businesses seeking to operate within Mexico can access cutting-edge cloud services conveniently.

This move forms part of AWS’s extensive long-term investment plan in Latin America, with a commitment to inject over $5 billion into Mexico over the next 15 years. As a testament to its dedication to fostering local talent and expertise, AWS plans to recruit and train additional personnel to manage and support operations within the new AWS region in Mexico.

Raquel Buenrostro, Mexican Secretary of Economy, hailed the significance of cloud services in driving Mexico’s digital and economic transformation. She expressed appreciation for AWS’s investment and emphasised its role in facilitating the near-shoring trend across various sectors of the Mexican economy. Buenrostro also welcomed AWS’s commitment to nurturing digital skills among students, small and medium-sized enterprises, and digital entrepreneurs in Mexico.

Upon its launch, the new AWS region in Mexico will encompass three availability zones, supplementing AWS’s existing network of 105 availability zones globally. These availability zones are strategically positioned to ensure business continuity while delivering low latency for high availability applications. Each zone operates autonomously with dedicated power, cooling, and security measures, interconnected through redundant, high-speed networks.

Prasad Kalyanaraman, Vice President of Infrastructure Services at AWS, expressed enthusiasm for the growth potential in Mexico’s diverse industries. He emphasised AWS’s role in enabling innovation and scalability for thousands of Mexican businesses across various sectors. Kalyanaraman underscored AWS’s commitment to empowering customers with advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence and machine learning, facilitating Mexico’s digital transformation journey and catalysing economic growth.

As AWS gears up to establish its presence in Mexico with cutting-edge infrastructure and comprehensive support services, businesses across the country stand poised to leverage cloud computing to drive innovation, enhance efficiency, and unlock new avenues for growth in the digital age.
