stc and Omnispace’s sign MoU to D2D 5G

Digital enabler stc Group and mobile connectivity firm Omnispace have agreed to work together on developing a satellite-based 5G mobile communications system. stc is set to use Omnispace’s 5G Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN), which meets 3GPP standards, to provide affordable global connectivity to customers outside of its existing cellular network coverage.

The scheme will help extend coverage in underserved regions across the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, ensuring customers receive uninterrupted direct-to-device mobile communications connectivity. The new initiative will give stc an edge in the market and enhance connectivity, particularly for customers operating in remote areas.

According to Eng. Khaled Ibrahim Aldharrab, Vice President of Technology Strategy and Architecture at stc, the collaboration with Omnispace provides an important opportunity to develop a combined cellular and satellite Non-Terrestrial Network that will offer stc customers connectivity through an industry-first. The collaboration will not only give stc a competitive advantage, but also provide their subscribers with advanced communications infrastructure. The company aims to work with Omnispace to extend their mobile roaming coverage to even the most remote regions.

The MoU provides an opportunity for stc to develop the next generation of communications infrastructure while meeting the increasing demand for reliable, high-speed and uninterrupted connectivity.
