DP World Expands Romanian Operations with New Hub

DP World has expanded its operations in Romania with the inauguration of two new facilities in Constanta and a new intermodal logistics hub in Aiud. Constanta, the largest container port on the Black Sea, now hosts a 5-hectare project cargo terminal for heavy and complex cargo, and a new roro terminal capable of handling up to 80,000 vehicles annually at peak capacity.

In Aiud, located in Romania’s industrial heartland, DP World has opened an 8-hectare intermodal logistics hub, enhancing rail and road connectivity. An additional $54 million investment will be made to establish a multi-transport platform in Constanta, set to open in 2025.

These facilities are designed to improve the connectivity between DP World’s existing sea, rail, barge, and truck services across Romania, facilitating the movement of goods between mainland Europe and the Black, North, and Adriatic Seas.

The announcement coincides with the 20th anniversary of DP World’s investment in Romania, the first European country in which it expanded. Over the past two decades, DP World has significantly contributed to the growth of Constanta port and Romania’s economy, now the second-largest in Eastern Europe after Poland.

“Romania is a dynamic economy well positioned to benefit from the rise in nearshoring and manufacturing,” said Rashid Abdulla, DP World Europe chief executive and managing director. “We look forward to building on our long-standing relationship with Romania and supporting its increasing role in regional trade and economic growth.”

Cosmin Carstea, DP World Romania chief executive, added, “DP World’s latest investments will boost cargo flows by around 2 million tonnes annually through Romania. These investments will reinforce Constanta’s position as a key container and roro hub in Central and Eastern Europe. We also plan to establish a centre of excellence for services in the Balkans to facilitate trade in the region.”
