Neuralink Successfully Inserts Human Brain Implant – Elon

Elon Musk’s Neuralink company achieved a significant milestone by successfully implanting one of its chip implants into a human brain. Musk announced the groundbreaking development on his social media platform, X, revealing that the patient who underwent the surgery on Sunday is “recovering well,” and the initial results indicate promising neuron spike detection.

Neuralink’s mission is to connect human brains to computers, aiming to address neurological conditions and unlock human potential. The company’s first step towards commercial use received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its initial trial in May of the previous year.

The surgical procedure involves the insertion of 64 flexible threads onto a specific part of the brain that controls movement intention. Due to their delicacy, a robot is employed to implant these threads. The threads enable the implant to record and transmit brain signals to an app, which then decodes a person’s movement decisions. The implant is powered by a wireless-charging battery.

Elon Musk, on his social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, announced that Neuralink’s first product would be called “Telepathy.” According to Musk, Telepathy enables users to “control your phone or computer and through them almost any device, just by thinking.” Initial users are expected to be individuals who have lost the use of their limbs, envisioning a scenario where individuals like Stephen Hawking could communicate at speeds surpassing traditional methods.

While Neuralink’s achievement is groundbreaking, it’s noteworthy that other companies, such as Blackrock Neurotech, have been involved in brain chip implantation since 2004. Neuralink’s success marks a significant step forward in the development of brain-computer interfaces, with potential implications for various fields, including healthcare and accessibility for individuals with disabilities.
