Coverage reaches 92.3% as MTN spends N3.9tn

MTN Nigeria, the leading telecommunications firm in Nigeria, has achieved 92.3% mobile telephony coverage across the country. This coverage, mostly on the 2G network, is a result of the company’s investment in infrastructure, which it has placed at over N3.9 trillion. MTN Nigeria boasts 2G population coverage of 92.3%, 3G reach of 83.6%, and 4G coverage of 79.1%.

According to the Nigerian Communications Commission, telephone density in Nigeria was 119.01% as of February 2023, with telecom operators connecting 325 million lines, 227 million of which are active. MTN Nigeria has more than 75 million customers and has been in operation in the country for over 21 years. The company employs 1,682 people and has over 17,800 base stations, 16 switching centres, over 32,500 kilometres of fibre, over one million retail touchpoints, and over 223,780 active mobile money agents.

MTN Nigeria, which released its 2022 audited financial report over the weekend, acknowledged the impressive performance despite a challenging macroeconomic environment. The firm recorded an impressive performance, with its contribution in taxes, levies, and duties to the government at more than N4.2 trillion and dividend to shareholders at over N2.8 trillion. MTN Nigeria employs more than two million Nigerians directly and indirectly through trade partners and agents.

MTN Nigeria, the first Nigeria-listed establishment to earn N2 trillion revenue, confirmed that it was able to weather macroeconomic challenges as it continued to invest in business and network resilience. The company has remained disciplined in its capital allocation, and in September 2022, it became the first mobile network operator to launch a 5G network in Nigeria. The 5G network has been rolled out in major cities across the country’s six geopolitical zones, with 588 sites delivering service to 5G-enabled smartphones.
