Abu Dhabi Unveils Ambitious $10bn Tourism Investment Plan

Abu Dhabi, a prominent economic and cultural hub in the UAE, is set to embark on a significant transformation in its tourism landscape, with plans to invest more than $10 billion in infrastructure as part of an ambitious strategy to bolster its position as a global tourism destination. Mohamed Al Mubarak, Chairman of the emirate’s Department of Culture and Tourism (DCT), revealed details of the comprehensive tourism strategy, signalling a bold commitment to elevating Abu Dhabi’s tourism sector.

The cornerstone of Abu Dhabi’s tourism vision is the Abu Dhabi Tourism Strategy 2030, recently announced by Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi. This comprehensive initiative aims to not only enhance the sector’s contribution to the gross domestic product (GDP) but also elevate Abu Dhabi’s status as a premier tourism destination on the global stage.

Key elements of the strategy include ambitious targets to expand the number of hotel rooms to 52,000, a substantial increase from the current 34,000, and add Dh90 billion ($24.5 billion) annually to the country’s GDP by 2030. Moreover, the plan aims to attract 39.3 million annual visitors to Abu Dhabi, a notable 7% year-on-year growth trajectory from an estimated 24 million visitors in the previous year.

The strategy encompasses 26 initiatives across four pivotal areas: offering and city activation, promotion and marketing, infrastructure and mobility, and visa, licensing, and regulation. Collaborative efforts between DCT Abu Dhabi and key partners, including the Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development, the Department of Municipalities and Transport, Abu Dhabi Airports Company, as well as various government and private entities, underscore the comprehensive approach to realising Abu Dhabi’s tourism ambitions.

A significant portion of the investment will be directed towards infrastructure development, including the establishment of major attractions such as the Guggenheim Museum, expansion of Warner Bros World, and development of Harry Potter World within it. Additionally, projects such as the Saadiyat Cultural District, Hudayriyat Island, and enhancements to Yas Waterworld will further enrich Abu Dhabi’s tourism offerings.

In tandem with infrastructure investments, Abu Dhabi aims to diversify its hospitality sector by adding more four and five-star beach destination hotels and promoting holiday homes, including expanding Airbnb offerings. This strategic focus underscores Abu Dhabi’s commitment to providing world-class hospitality experiences and catering to the evolving needs and preferences of travellers.

Furthermore, DCT Abu Dhabi plans to expand its tourism source markets to 26, with targeted roadshows across Asia, Europe, Africa, and North America. By diversifying its source markets and enhancing outreach efforts, Abu Dhabi aims to strengthen its position as a preferred destination for international travellers.

Despite global challenges such as geopolitical tensions and regional conflicts, Abu Dhabi’s tourism sector remains resilient, underscoring its reputation as a safe and secure destination. As part of its continued efforts to enhance the visitor experience and streamline services, DCT Abu Dhabi is also set to launch a “super app” that will integrate various tourism services platforms, providing visitors with a seamless and immersive experience.

Abu Dhabi’s ambitious tourism strategy reflects its unwavering commitment to sustainable growth and economic diversification, positioning the emirate as a dynamic and competitive player in the global tourism landscape. With strategic investments, collaborative partnerships, and innovative initiatives, Abu Dhabi is poised to realise its vision of becoming a premier destination for travellers worldwide.
