Morocco to build new infrastructure for Nigeria

The government of Morocco is looking to establish a downstream division of state-run ONHYM to maintain domestic natural gas infrastructure. This primarily includes a project to deliver gas by pipeline from Nigeria to Morocco through 13 different countries in the region.

A source at ONHYM in a statement confirming the development to S&P Global Platts, said, “It’s on the way. It’s a new entity created to take care of the downstream business.”

ONHYM currently controls the operations of the pipeline known as MNGP, which takes gas from Nigeria (the holder of Africa’s largest gas reserves) to Morocco. The gas produce is then shipped to the European market from there.

According to an SPG source who spoke on the condition of anonymity stated that Morocco is also developing networks to facilitate targeted distribution of gas to industry hubs where automobile and aeronautics industries are expanding their operations.

“The industrial sector in Morocco is growing fast and gas will be an important part of this growth,” the source added, declining to speak to Morocco’s plans for the replacement of lost gas from Algeria.
