The British pound is increasingly being viewed as a potential safe-haven currency, according to Goldman Sachs, highlighting a notable shift in global economic sentiment. The bank’s assessment suggests that investors are beginning to regard sterling as a more stable store of value during periods of uncertainty, reflecting broader changes in the international economic landscape.
Goldman argues that the pound’s recent performance has been supported by stronger economic fundamentals and a more favourable macroeconomic backdrop. Unlike previous periods of market turbulence, when sterling often weakened as investors sought safety elsewhere, the currency has shown greater resilience amid geopolitical tensions and concerns over global growth. This changing behaviour has prompted economists and investors to reconsider the pound’s role within international financial markets.
A key factor behind the shift is the UK’s improved external position and relatively attractive interest rate environment. Higher yields have helped draw foreign capital into British assets, while confidence in the country's economic institutions has supported demand for sterling. At the same time, slower growth prospects and fiscal concerns in several major economies have encouraged investors to diversify beyond traditional safe-haven currencies such as the US dollar, Swiss franc and Japanese yen.
The development also reflects a broader reordering of global capital flows. Investors are increasingly prioritising economic resilience, policy stability and investment attractiveness when allocating funds. For the UK, this represents a significant change from the post-Brexit period, when uncertainty surrounding trade and economic policy frequently weighed on market confidence.
While Goldman stops short of declaring sterling a fully established safe haven, the bank believes its evolving status underscores growing confidence in the UK economy. Continued economic stability, controlled inflation and sustained investment inflows will be critical in determining whether the pound can maintain this momentum and strengthen its position within the global financial system.
