Micron Technology will invest $10 billion over the next decade in a new research institution based in Boise, Idaho, strengthening the American research infrastructure behind advanced memory and artificial intelligence computing.

Construction of Micron Research Labs is scheduled to begin in 2027. The flagship campus will accommodate hundreds of researchers and host technical conferences, workshops and innovation forums. Its work will cover memory technologies, computing architectures, semiconductor packaging and manufacturing processes.

The project is designed as a collaborative research network rather than a conventional corporate laboratory. Micron plans to involve customers, universities, government bodies, start-ups and semiconductor companies. Funding will also support academic partnerships and satellite laboratories connected to the company’s operations across the United States, Europe and Asia.

This structure places Boise at the centre of Micron’s international research programme while maintaining links with technical teams in Japan, India, Singapore and Taiwan. The company describes the campus as the first dedicated memory research hub of its kind in the United States.

Memory has become a central component of AI infrastructure because accelerators require rapid access to large datasets. High-bandwidth memory supplies that data at greater speed than conventional products, supporting the training and operation of advanced models. Rising AI investment has increased demand across a market led by Micron, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix.

The new programme is separate from more than $250 billion that Micron has already committed to American manufacturing and research. It will not provide immediate production capacity because the Boise site is not a fabrication plant. Instead, it will develop the technologies and processes intended to inform future chip production.

Micron’s decision adds a long-term research anchor to the American semiconductor industry, connecting scientific development, advanced manufacturing knowledge and AI computing within a single international network.
