US semiconductor shares regained nearly $250 billion in market value on 19 October, drawing renewed investor attention to chipmakers even as much of Wall Street declined. Gains led by Micron and Intel suggested that appetite for artificial intelligence infrastructure remains resilient, although buying was concentrated in selected technology stocks.

Nearly 90% of a group of 60 semiconductor-related companies traded higher. Micron and Intel each gained more than 2%, while Sandisk rose almost 5%. Nvidia, Advanced Micro Devices and Western Digital also advanced. Their performance helped support major indices despite declines among roughly 70% of S&P 500 constituents.

The rebound followed a difficult week for memory-chip investors. Micron had lost approximately 15% and Sandisk 18%, illustrating how quickly expectations can shift in a sector closely linked to AI spending. Monday's gains recovered some ground but did not erase those earlier losses.

Company-specific developments also influenced investment decisions. JPMorgan upgraded Intel from Underweight to Neutral, pointing to opportunities from AI demand and semiconductor shortages. Meanwhile, cloud infrastructure provider CoreWeave gave back most of its early gains despite a Goldman Sachs upgrade to Buy, indicating that financing concerns still weighed on sentiment.

For investors, the divergence between chip stocks and the wider market highlights concentration risk. An advancing headline index can conceal weakness across many holdings, particularly when a small number of technology companies drive returns. The uneven recovery strengthens the case for assessing valuations, earnings prospects and exposure to AI spending rather than treating the entire sector as one investment opportunity.

Attention now turns to whether the recovery can hold. The PHLX Semiconductor Index faced an important level around 11,500, with 11,000 to 11,100 viewed as potential support. Sustained gains would signal firmer confidence, while another reversal could renew concerns about volatility.
