GM Upgrades V8s Amid EV Competition

General Motors is strengthening its combustion technology even as competition in electric vehicles intensifies, unveiling two new V8 engines for the 2027 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500. The move shows how major carmakers are balancing current demand for traditional powertrains with longer-term investment in electrification.
The new sixth-generation V8 range includes 5.7-litre and 6.6-litre engines, replacing GM’s existing 5.3-litre and 6.2-litre units. Both deliver higher power and torque, while the wider line-up retains a 3.0-litre diesel and an upgraded 2.7-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine.
The technology push matters because full-size pickups remain among GM’s most profitable vehicles. Demand for towing capacity, range and combustion performance continues to support V8 sales, even as manufacturers develop electric alternatives.
GM is also competing in an EV market that has become more challenging. Electric vehicle growth in the US has slowed from earlier expectations, while competition from Ford, Tesla, Rivian and other manufacturers continues. GM already offers electric versions of the Silverado and Sierra, but battery-powered trucks have yet to match the commercial importance of petrol models.
The result is a dual-track technology strategy. GM is improving combustion engines while continuing to invest in batteries, software and electric platforms. This gives the company greater flexibility as consumer demand, regulation and charging infrastructure evolve.
For the wider automotive industry, competition is becoming less about replacing one technology with another and more about managing several powertrains at once. GM’s new V8 investment shows that combustion engineering remains commercially important even as electric vehicle development continues.
