VMware broadens private network projects in LatAm

According to José Duarte, the business’s director of Brazil, the US virtualization and cloud infrastructure company VMware is expanding its project portfolio to include private wireless networks across Latin America, including 5G.

“We have announced partnerships, whether with Ericsson, with NTT, for private networks for 5G. We have other cases of private networks to be announced as well. It’s a trend in many segments, whether it’s the public sector, the financial sector, or the healthcare sector,” Duarte is quoted as saying.

Integrators, hardware manufacturers, and telecoms are just a few of the partners that make up VMware’s ecosystem. The group is developing network virtualization projects for Telefônica Brasil and TIM in the telco cloud environment, effectively “with all the main carriers.”

In January of last year, Telefônica made the announcement that it had partnered with VMware and NTT on a significant initiative for the virtualization and modernization of networks and infrastructure. The carrier plans to install, integrate, and manage cloud-native capabilities and virtual network functions.

The implementation, which is already underway, is the result of a two-year study that included proofs of concept and laboratory tests.

All of TIM’s data centre workloads are being moved to the Microsoft and Oracle clouds as part of an initiative that includes VMware. Customers of VMware in Latin America include América Móvil, Millicom, and Telefónica.

Projects with Telecom Argentina, in collaboration with Oracle, and with Claro in Colombia are among the company’s most recent deals that have been made public.

Around 150 telecom companies use VMware’s technology, including Tier 1 communication service providers, to host their network activities and infrastructure and provide connectivity and services over 4G and 5G networks.
