UK Satellite Funding Targets Rural Infrastructure

The UK government is investing £13 million in satellite communications projects to improve connectivity across transport, agriculture and remote services. The UK Space Agency will support 16 projects delivered through the European Space Agency’s Advanced Research in Telecommunications Systems programme.
One project will test satellite broadband on a train operating along ScotRail’s West Highland Line. Mobile and fixed broadband coverage can be unreliable across the remote route. The SODOR project, led by CGI IT UK, will equip a train with satellite technology and assess connection performance during journeys.
The trial addresses an infrastructure gap that terrestrial networks can struggle to cover. Railway routes cross sparsely populated areas where installing continuous fibre or mobile equipment may be difficult and costly. Satellite links can extend coverage without communications infrastructure beside every section of track.
Agriculture is another focus. Farmer Charlie’s GAUFF project is developing affordable sensors to monitor crops, soil and environmental conditions. Combining satellite and mobile connectivity is intended to transmit information from farms with limited internet access. The technology is expected to become available by the end of next summer.
Lacuna Space is developing smaller satellite-connected terminals designed to link sensors and equipment to the internet from remote locations. Lower hardware costs would be important for extending connected monitoring across rural operations.
The funding covers development and trials rather than nationwide deployment. The projects must demonstrate reliable performance, integration with existing networks and acceptable operating costs before broader adoption can be assessed.
For Britain’s infrastructure sector, the programme examines how satellites can complement terrestrial communications. The trials will provide evidence about whether satellite connectivity can improve passenger internet services, agricultural monitoring and remote equipment management in areas beyond dependable network coverage.
