HP Taps Huawei Wi-Fi Patent Portfolio

HP has signed a multi-year global agreement to license certain Wi-Fi patents from Huawei, extending the Chinese technology group’s intellectual property reach despite continuing US restrictions. The arrangement shows how technical standards can sustain commercial links even when wider business relationships remain politically constrained.

Huawei has been on the US Entity List since 2019, limiting its access to American suppliers and technologies. The new agreement gives HP rights to use specified Huawei Wi-Fi patents, while Huawei receives reciprocal patent rights from HP. Financial terms were not disclosed, and HP stressed that the agreement is a standard-essential patent licence rather than a broader strategic partnership or commercial collaboration.

The deal follows an earlier patent dispute involving HP, Huawei and other companies. That dispute led to an agreement last autumn allowing HP to access a pool of about 2,000 patents related to wireless network connectivity. Huawei was among the founding members of the Sisvel WiFi 6 patent pool, strengthening its position in the licensing framework surrounding widely adopted wireless standards.

For Huawei, the agreement underlines the commercial value of its research and patent portfolio outside China. Licensing allows the company to generate returns from technologies embedded in global standards, even as geopolitical restrictions continue to limit some forms of direct cooperation. For HP, securing access to essential patents reduces legal uncertainty and supports continued development of products that rely on Wi-Fi connectivity.

The agreement highlights the difficulty of separating global technology ecosystems along national lines. Trade restrictions can limit supply chains and corporate partnerships, but standardised technologies remain built on intellectual property held across multiple jurisdictions. That makes patent licensing an important channel through which companies can maintain access to essential technology while keeping broader commercial relationships limited.
