Minister claims BMW to invest greatly in Mexico

BMW is planning a significant new investment in the Mexican state of San Luis Potosi, where the company already has a manufacturing facility, according to Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard.

He and President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador previously announced that BMW is investing around 800 million euros in San Luis Potosi, however, it was not specified whether it was a new investment or an expansion of the existing plant.

As revealed by Ebrard while addressing reporters after a diplomatic event, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has charged the ministry to accelerate investments in Mexico. He had previously announced a significant investment that will be made in San Luis Potosi by BMW.

It is not specified by the foreign minister what the investment will be used for. BMW, which already operates three plants in Latin America, opened its billion-dollar San Luis Potosi facility in 2019. At present, the plant manufactures the 3 Series, the 2 Series Coupe and M2 models.

Ebrard stated that President Lopez Obrador had discussed the investment with the German President and Germany’s automotive industry during a visit by German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier to Mexico in September. Lopez Obrador also announced that he and Ebrard will travel to San Luis Potosi in February.
