Mexican Minister in Canada to resolve conflict

Mexican Economy Minister Raquel Buenrostro met with Canadian firms to discuss the progress of energy agreements made at a meeting with President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, according to the Mexican economy ministry.

The Canadian firms, Northland Power, Canadian Solar, and pension fund La Caisse de depot et placement du Quebec, met with Mexican officials on Monday to discuss the agreements, and the meetings will continue next month.

The meetings were held to address issues related to Mexico’s electricity sector, after the companies had previously met with Lopez Obrador at talks with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau earlier in January. The Mexican economy ministry also met with ATCO and Pattern Energy to discuss their issues with the energy sector, but those issues have since been resolved.

A Mexican official announced that a “framework” for each of the companies’ problems with Mexico’s energy sector had been agreed upon. The United States and Canada had initiated dispute settlement proceedings against Mexico’s push to prioritize state-run energy companies under a regional trade pact, but it is unclear if this meeting is related to that situation.
