DB ECO joins in on San Francisco’s Link21


For the Link21 project, Arup was given a 55 million USD planning and engineering contract by the San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) in September 2021. According to the contract, DB ECO will offer technical modelling support for crucial transformational elements.

A second transbay passenger rail crossing between Oakland and San Francisco is the centrepiece of the Link21 project. DB ECO is creating project alternatives and business case evaluations for this crossing to support service and operations planning.

In addition to becoming the first tunnel for main line regional and intercity rail under the bay, the crossing between San Francisco and Oakland might give BART access to a second tunnel that crosses the San Francisco Bay.

Regional rail traffic in the area would benefit greatly from the possibilities for connecting trains under the bay. In order to inform technical development and potential operation patterns for the new network, DB ECO has so far finished its preliminary investigations.

In order to create outputs for the business case and cost analysis, it has also developed a digital infrastructure and operations model using VIRIATO software. This model integrates inputs from the engineering team with service concept designs from the planning team.

The Salesforce Transit Center station in San Francisco benefits from the analysis performed by DB ECO. The Link21 project will make use of this study because the station will be a key hub for connections between San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Sacramento.
