Balderton Capital Raises $1.3bn for New Investment Funds

Balderton Capital, a key backer of companies like Revolut and Darktrace, has raised $1.3 billion across two new funds aimed at supporting tech firms from seed stage to IPO.

The venture capital firm secured $615 million for its Early Stage Fund IX and $685 million for its second Growth Fund. This dual fundraising marks a first for Balderton, which plans to invest in promising European tech startups and scaleups.

Managing partner Bernard Liautaud emphasised Balderton’s commitment to being the go-to partner for European tech founders, stating that the new funds will help build world-changing businesses across the continent.

Balderton, founded in 2000, has invested in nearly 300 tech companies, including GoCardless, Wayve, and Depop. The new funds are supported by investors like British Patient Capital, a subsidiary of the UK’s British Business Bank, which committed $90 million.

UK Growth Minister Lord Livermore highlighted the importance of such investments in fostering British scaleups, viewing Balderton’s role as vital for driving their success.

Recent investments by Balderton include a £44 million Series B round for carbon data platform Sylvera and a £3.1 million round for edtech startup Grasp.
